<\/span><\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n Paul Schwingenschl\u00f6gl wurde 1958 in Wien geboren. Ab dem achten Lebensjahr erhielt er Klavierunterricht, f\u00fcnf Jahre sp\u00e4ter brachte ihm sein Vater die ersten T\u00f6ne auf der Trompete bei. Ausschlaggebend f\u00fcr seine musikalische Entwicklung war ein einj\u00e4hriger Aufenthalt in den USA 1976-77 als Austauschsch\u00fcler an der <\/span>Walt Whitman High School<\/i><\/span> in Bethesda, Maryland. T\u00e4gliche Proben mit der High School Big Band, die unter anderem als Vorgruppe f\u00fcr die <\/span>Buddy Rich<\/i><\/span> Big Band auftrat, und der Besuch vieler Jazz- und Rockkonzerte pr\u00e4gten dieses Jahr.<\/span><\/p>\n Zur\u00fcck in Wien nahm er Privatunterricht beim renommierten Trompeter und Komponisten Franz Koglmann<\/i> und nahm an Workshops mit Mike Mantler<\/i>, Bill Dixon<\/i>, George Russell<\/i> und Gil Evans<\/i> teil. Gemeinsam mit Hans Steiner<\/i>, Walter Malli<\/i> und Jacques Nobili<\/i> gr\u00fcndete er das Bl\u00e4serensemble TRANS, f\u00fcr welches seine ersten Kompositionen am Schnittpunkt von Jazz und europ\u00e4ischer Moderne entstanden. <\/span><\/p>\n Ein einschneidendes Ereignis auf dem Weg zum Profimusiker war der Auftritt mit der Gil Evans<\/i> Band beim Jazzfest Wien 1986 an der Seite von Jazzgr\u00f6\u00dfen wie Lew<\/i> Soloff<\/i>, George Adams<\/i> und John Surman<\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n Ende 1987 zog er nach West-Berlin. Schnell kam er in der pulsierenden Mauerstadt in Kontakt mit renommierten Musikern aus der DDR \u2013 darunter Johannes Bauer<\/i>, Ernst-Ludwig Petrowsky<\/i>, Helmut Forsthoff<\/i>, Joe Sachse<\/i>, Klaus Koch<\/i> \u2013, aber auch mit der Westberliner Szene. Im Januar 1990, unmittelbar nach dem Mauerfall, tourte er mit dem Wiener Gitarristen und Komponisten\u00a0 <\/span>Alfred Polansky<\/i> zwei Wochen durch die DDR. <\/span><\/p>\n In den 1990er Jahren widmete Schwingenschl\u00f6gl sich intensiv der Zusammenarbeit mit au\u00dfereurop\u00e4ischen Musikern. <\/span>Mit der \u00e4gyptischen Band Salamat<\/i> konzertierte er beim Pirineos Sur Festival<\/i> Huesca (Spanien) und beim World<\/i> Roots Festival<\/i> in Amsterdam. In seiner eigenen Band African Chase Experience<\/i> experimentierte er mit einer ungew\u00f6hnlichen Besetzung: <\/span>afrikanische Trommler und S\u00e4nger, eine dreik\u00f6pfige Trompetensektion und exzellente Blues- und Rockmusiker als Rhythmusgruppe. <\/span><\/p>\n Dieses Ensemble trat unter anderem beim Jazzfestival Chemnitz<\/i> und beim Jazzfestival Leipzig<\/i> auf. Weitere Auftritte gab es mit dem Manfred Schulze Bl\u00e4ser Quintett<\/i> (mit Johannes Bauer<\/i>, Manfred Hering<\/i>, Heiner<\/i> Reinhardt<\/i> und Gert Anklam<\/i>), unter anderem beim Jazzfest Berlin<\/i> 1996.<\/span><\/p>\n In den Jahren 2000 bis 2010 arbeitete Schwingenschl\u00f6gl intensiv mit einigen franz\u00f6sischen Musikern wie Jean-Jacques Avenel<\/i>, Jean-Louis M\u00e9chali<\/i> und Malo<\/i> Vallois<\/i> zusammen. Er konzertierte mit verschiedenen Ensembles in ganz Europa. Mit seinem 12-k\u00f6pfigen Orchester Counterblast<\/i> trat er unter anderem 2002 beim InnTOENE Jazzfestival<\/i> in \u00d6sterreich auf, mit der Band Takabanda<\/i> beim Jazzfestival Estate Romana<\/i> in Rom. Ein weiterer Schwerpunkt war die Zusammenarbeit mit russischen Musikern wie Evgeny und <\/i>Vladimir Makarov<\/i> und mit der russischen Band Bloody Kalinka<\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n Aus der Begegnung mit der Minimal Music Komponistin Catherine Christer Hennix<\/i> im Jahr 2011 entstand eine intensive Zusammenarbeit. Mit ihrem Ensemble CC Hennix and the Chora(s)san Time-Court Mirage<\/i> mit Amir ElSaffar<\/i>, Hilary Jeffery<\/i>, <\/span>Elena Kakaliagou <\/i>und Robin Hayward<\/i> konzertierte er beim Spectral Festival for<\/i> Adventurous Music<\/i> in Berlin, beim Sonic Arts Festival<\/i> in Amsterdam, beim Ultima<\/i> Festival<\/i> 2014 in New York, bei der MaerzMusik<\/i> 2017 in Berlin und in der Empty Gallery<\/i> in Hongkong 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n Mit der indischen Bluesband Chronic Blues Circus<\/i> spielte er 2013 mehrere Konzerte in der s\u00fcdindischen Stadt Bangalore<\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n Gemeinsam mit Alfred Polansky<\/i> realisierte Schwingenschl\u00f6gl 2016 das Malcolm Lowry Projekt<\/i> , das im September 2017 sein Debut gab.<\/span><\/p>\n Ebenfalls 2016 formierte er mit dem Kontrabassisten Udo Betz<\/i> und dem Gitarristen Jan Weber<\/i> die Improvisationsband Trialogues<\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n Im Jahr 2017 trat er beim renommierten <\/span>Jazzfest Berlin<\/i><\/span> auf mit dem Ensemble <\/span>Amir ElSaffar + Zinc & Copper<\/i><\/span> und beim Leipziger Jazzfestival <\/span>LeipJAZZig<\/i><\/span> mit den Gruppen <\/span>Tetrapack<\/i><\/span> und <\/span>Manfred Schulze Bl\u00e4ser Quintett<\/i><\/span> auf. <\/span><\/p>\n Im Jahr 2018 komponierte er im Auftrag seines Wiener Produzenten Ronnie Rocket die <\/span>Plejaden*Suite<\/i><\/span>, die am 27. April im <\/span>Greve Studio Berlin<\/i><\/span> uraufgef\u00fchrt wurde. Eine weitere Auff\u00fchrung der Plejaden*Suite fand im Juni bei <\/span>Jazz am Kaisersteg<\/i><\/span> statt. Ebenfalls im Juni spielte er bei der <\/span>Jazzwerkstatt Peitz<\/i><\/span> ein Duo mit dem Schlagzeuger <\/span>John Betsch<\/i><\/span>. <\/span><\/p>\n 2019 folgten weitere Auff\u00fchrungen der Plejaden*Suite<\/i> in Berlin und Schulzendorf\/Brandenburg.<\/span><\/p>\n Im Jahr 2020 wurden wegen der Corona-Pandemie fast alle Konzerte abgesagt.<\/span><\/p>\n 2021 erhielt Schwingenschl\u00f6gl erneut ein Kompositionsstipendium des Senats f\u00fcr Kulturelle Angelegenheiten von Berlin. Er komponierte ein neues Werk mit dem Titel Oumuamua Suite<\/i>, dessen Urauff\u00fchrung im November des Jahres im Zigzag Club<\/i> Berlin stattfand.<\/span><\/p>\n In den letzten Jahren wandte er sich au\u00dferdem der Rockmusik zu, so als Keyboarder und Trompeter der Band Black Rock<\/i> und als Trompeter der Industrial Rock Band Winterhart<\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n Schwingenschl\u00f6gls Werk und Wirken ist gekennzeichnet durch die bewusste \u00dcberschreitung von Genregrenzen. Obwohl Modern und Cool Jazz eine wichtige Rolle in seinem Schaffen einnehmen, sieht er sich nicht als Jazzmusiker. Jazz ist f\u00fcr ihn gleichberechtigt mit Genres wie Soul, Funk, Blues, Psychedelic Rock, Weltmusik, zeitgen\u00f6ssischer Musik und freier Improvisation. Formale Festlegungen sind f\u00fcr ihn nur im konkreten Zusammenhang eines Projekts oder Ensembles sinnvoll. At the age of eight he received piano lessons, five years later his father taught him first notes on the trumpet. A one-year stay in the USA 1976\u2013<\/strong>77 as an exchange student at Walt Whitman High School<\/i> in Bethesda, Maryland proved decisive for his development as a musician. Daily rehearsals with the high school big band, which among other things performed as an opening act for the Buddy Rich<\/i> Big Band, and visits to many jazz and rock concerts marked this year. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n Back in Vienna, he took private lessons with the renowned trumpeter and composer Franz Koglmann<\/i> and participated in workshops with Mike Mantler, Bill Dixon, George Russell<\/i> and Gil Evans<\/i>. Together with Hans Steiner, Walter Malli<\/i> and Jacques Nobili<\/i> he founded the wood and brass wind ensemble TRANS, for which he wrote his first compositions mixing jazz and European modernism. <\/span><\/p>\n A key event on his way to a professional musician was his performance with the Gil Evans<\/i> Band at the 1986 Vienna Jazz Festival together with jazz greats such as Lew Soloff, George Adams <\/i>and John Surman<\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n At the end of 1987 he moved to West Berlin. In the pulsating Wall city, he quickly came into contact with renowned musicians from the GDR \u2013 <\/strong>including Johannes Bauer, Ernst-Ludwig Petrowsky, Helmut Forsthoff, Joe Sachse, Klaus Koch<\/i> \u2013 <\/strong>but also with the West Berlin scene. In January 1990, immediately after the fall of the Wall, he toured the GDR for two weeks with Viennese guitarist and composer Alfred Polansky<\/i>. <\/span><\/p>\n In the 1990s, Schwingenschl\u00f6gl devoted himself intensively to collaborations with non-European musicians. With the Egyptian band Salamat<\/i> he performed at the Pirineos Sur Festival<\/i> Huesca (Spain) and at the World Roots Festival<\/i> in Amsterdam. In his own band African Chase Experience <\/i>he experimented with an unusual line-up: African drummers and singers, a three-piece trumpet section and excellent blues and rock musicians in the rhythm section. This ensemble performed at the Chemnitz Jazz Festival<\/i> and the Leipzig Jazz Festival<\/i>. He also played with the Manfred Schulze Bl\u00e4ser Quintett<\/i> (together with Johannes Bauer, Manfred Hering, Heiner Reinhardt<\/i> and Gert Anklam<\/i>), among others at the Jazzfest Berlin<\/i> in 1996.<\/span><\/p>\n From 2000 to 2010 Schwingenschl\u00f6gl worked intensively with French musicians such as Jean-Jacques Avenel, Jean-Louis M\u00e9chali<\/i> and Malo Vallois<\/i>. He performed with various ensembles throughout Europe. With his 12-piece orchestra Counterblast<\/i> he took part at the InnTOENE Jazzfestival<\/i> in Austria in 2002, and with the band Takabanda<\/i> at the Estate Romana<\/i> jazz festival in Rome. He also played with Russian musicians such as Evgeny and Vladimir Makarov<\/i> and with the Russian band Bloody Kalinka<\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n From the encounter with the minimal music composer Catherine Christer Hennix<\/i> in 2011, an intensive collaboration was born. Another performance of Plejaden*Suite took place in June at Jazz am Kaisersteg<\/i>, Berlin. Also in June, he played a duo with drummer John Betsch<\/i> at Jazzwerkstatt Peitz<\/i>. <\/span><\/p>\n In 2019, further performances of his work Plejaden*Suite<\/i> took place in Berlin and in the State of Brandenburg.<\/span><\/p>\n In the year 2020, due to the Corona pandemic, almost all planned concerts were cancelled.<\/span><\/p>\n In 2021, he won another composition award of the Senate of Berlin. As a result, he composed a new work entitled Oumuamua Suite<\/i>. The premiere of this work took place at Berlin’s Zigzag Club<\/i> in November. <\/span><\/p>\n He has also turned to rock music in recent years, as keyboard and trumpet player for the band Black Rock<\/i> and as trumpeter for the industrial rock band Winterhart<\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n Schwingenschl\u00f6gl’s work and activity is characterized by the intentional crossing of genre boundaries. Although modern and cool jazz play an important role in his work, he does not see himself as a jazz musician. For him, jazz is on an equal footing with genres such as soul, funk, blues, psychedelic rock, world music, contemporary music and free improvisation. For him, formal definitions only make sense in the concrete context of a project or ensemble.
